Hello! I'm Gale (she/they) and I'm an English major and Spanish minor in the interdisciplinary honors program at the University of Washington!

Stories have always been important to me — words were the thing that I understood the most. When I arrived at UW, it was with that in mind — I wanted to find a way to tell stories, to help other people tell their stories, and to learn as many new ones as possible.

At the beginning, I majored in History, because I loved learning pieces of the past and finding queer people within it. This led me to take Queer History with Laurie Marhoefer, where I first discovered Shelly’s Leg, the first openly gay bar in the United States. This was the first ongoing academic project I fell in love with (I talk about all of my work on Shelly’s Leg on a later page) — and part of what caused me to change my major from history to English, where I was better able to both focus on storytelling as a concept and the ways queerness impacts it.

I wanted to write a lot, and I tried to find and create as many ways to do that as possible.

My freshman year, I began the audio drama Back Again, Back Again, a story about alternate realms, ex-prophecy children, and queer girls with swords. I continued working on this throughout college: I finished S1 my freshman year, won two international Audio Verse Awards my sophomore year while beginning S2, and recently passed 60k downloads and completed S2. At the beginning of my sophomore year, I began working at The Daily, where I was able to explore Seattle and document the city through a different kind of storytelling. I went to more concerts than I ever thought I’d be able to, interviewed musicians, and got involved in community events. I am currently on the final draft of a book that I began working on over the summer, and plan to begin querying in hopes of publishing the book in the future!

While I wanted to tell stories, I also wanted to find ways to help others tell their own, which has led me to two places — the publishing world, and the classroom. I have been involved in teaching opportunities like Riverways, DnD summer camps,a TESOL program in Leon, Spain, and tutoring in Spanish and English with high-school students. I also was lucky enough to begin working at Pulley Press, a poetry imprint that focuses on uplifting rural storytellers — which means a lot to me as someone who grew up in Appalachia. As I move forward in life, I want to continue to center storytelling, and am excited to see where the rest of my life takes me!
